You're an experienced leader with a vision for how technology can more than enhance a business - it can transform it.  Join the Alberta Health Services team as we integrate over 1,300 independent systems into a single health information system that will ensure that patients, families, and medical professionals can get the right information, at the right time, and in the right place.  The Clinical Information System (CIS) project will empower Albertans to take ownership of their own health and care by giving them increased access to their own health information, anywhere in the province.

The Director of Projects - CIS will lead this transformation, and champion how we leverage technology to implement this large-scale, multi-year project.  Embracing the challenges of this important and complex project will require an experienced, methodical project manager who can successfully guide this project through all stages and milestones to completion.

Your Opportunity

The AHS CIS Program is a collaborative effort between Alberta Health and AHS staff, clinicians, and patients.  As the Director of Projects, with CIS you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on health care by being a key contributor in implementing the CIS program.  Working with a multidisciplinary team of stakeholders, the Director will report to the Senior Program Director (SPD) and collaborate to jointly establish, contribute, and maintain the operational strategic plan for the CIS project.  This position will also engage and build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including senior executives, physicians, clinical staff and other relevant partners.

Specific Accountabilities:

The Director is accountable for CIS projects consisting of diverse teams of Project Managers and Directors who derive from various portfolios.  The ideal candidate will be able to effectively use their influence to motivate and drive transformation change across the multiple business units.  The individual must support and lead individual programs to ensure consistency of individual time-lines, project plans and budgets are met efficiently.

The successful candidate will be a thought leader who will proactively manage risks and responds to change with agility.  As part of this role, the Director will ensure project deliverables are aligned through the Statements of Work (SOW) process.  SOWs are tracked to guarantee progress reports are constantly provided to program sponsors, engaging stakeholders as necessary.  The incumbent must foster an environment of collaboration and champion project methodologies to guarantee an integrated strategy is created and practiced.

The Director will have operational accountability for creating a 5 to 10 year integrated project plan, reviewing activity reports and budgets in order to determine that progress and goals are achieved.  They must be adaptable in revising plans when required and understand how multiple factors may influence the plans.  The Director will effectively oversee portfolio programs and projects to ensure stakeholders understand and meet overall objectives and outcomes.

  • A bachelors in Informatics and Project Management.
  • 15+ years of progressive responsibility in leading large integrated IT programs of significant size, complexity and diversity.
  • Possesses a demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development.
  • Project Management Professional designation is an asset.

Other key competencies for this role include:

  • A proven planner/scheduler who has developed and maintained a (program) schedule spanning multiple projects.
  • Result driven individual.
  • Strong understanding of various project management approaches, tools and phases of the project life-cycle.
  • Experience with Information Technology projects software, hardware, or infrastructure.
  • Problem solving and root cause identification skills related to scheduling issues.
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal and provide only as much detail as required.
  • Must be a team player and able to work with collaboratively others.
  • Strong analytic and decision making abilities.
  • Proficient in MS Project and Project Server scheduling software.
  • Proficient in MS Office, in particular Excel.
