Summary of Duties / Key Responsibilities:

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a large academic health sciences centre in the heart of Toronto. With 1.3 million patient visits each year, Sunnybrook has established itself across five campuses.  Sunnybrook is proud to be fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and each year the hospital provides educational opportunities for more than 4,000 students from around the world.

As the Director of Operations for the Operating Room and Related Services, you will be leading surgical activity over two Sunnybrook Sites.  The Department is the surgical home to Sunnybrook's Trauma Centre, the largest trauma centre in Canada; the Ross Tilley Burn Centre, Ontario’s largest burn centre; the Odette Cancer Centre, the sixth largest cancer centre in North America; and the Holland Centre, performing over 2,000 hip and knee replacements annually.  The OR and Related Services portfolio at Sunnybrook is one of the most complex and exciting work environment’s you will experience encompassing state-of-the-art surgical activity in all surgical specialties, many of which are advancing image guided minimal and non-invasive surgical techniques.

The Director of Operations, together with the Chief of Surgery and Chief of Anesthesia, form the OR Executive, reporting to the Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and leading the Operating Room and Related Services in one of the most dynamic academic health sciences centres in Canada. The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing multi-site strategic and operational direction for a portfolio of areas with a 69 million dollar operating budget, including the Operating Room, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, High Intensity Surgical Stay Unit, Regional Block Areas, Same Day Surgery, Surgical Short Stay Unit, Medical Outpatient Clinic, Transfusion Medicine Clinic, the IV Team, Endoscopy, Colposcopy, Cystoscopy, Pre-Admissions Clinic, Perfusion and the Medical Device Reprocessing Centre.

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in strategic and operational planning; performance and quality management, preferably gained from working in a complex OR environment.  Ideally, the candidate should have developed these skills in the context of a large academic health sciences centre. A critical success factor is the ability to build strong teams and be a strategic and operational partner to the Program Operations Directors and Program Chiefs.

This role works in collaboration with respective Medical Directors, Senior Leadership, Directors, Managers, interprofessional teams, patients and their families.   The role responsibilities include clinical and financial administration, capital planning, program planning, OR schedule development, strategic planning for future OR development, and providing representation at regional and provincial meetings relevant to portfolio activity.  The Operations Director will have several direct reports, including several Patient Care Managers, Advanced Practice Nurses, Clinical Educators and a Nurse Practitioner.

The successful candidate will:
  • Demonstrate leadership consistent with our mission, vision and values 
  • Lead the Program to identify resource needs, create care delivery processes and systems to achieve the highest quality care
  • Contribute to the Hospital’s strategic planning process by identifying priorities and implement program changes 
  • Develop the Program budget consistent with effective utilization of resources in accordance with the Program and Hospital operating plan
  • Provide leadership on hospital wide activities such as Accreditation 
  • Represent the Program on Committees as required
  • Demonstrate innovative approaches to care delivery, acknowledging our critical role in the Ontario healthcare system
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve organizational goals and objectives
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Clinical or health administration master’s degree
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of formal leadership/management experience (preferably at the Director level and/or in an OR environment)
  • Experience leading programs or managing units within a complex health care setting
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and agile while efficiently supporting the organization during periods of change and shifts in strategic goals and objectives
  • Experience in building and leading effective teams to conduct various project work such as process improvement
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication/presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and supportively across programs and departments and with diverse interprofessional teams
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement action plans that achieve organizational goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated excellence in thinking broadly and strategically when identifying the needs of the program and organization and creating an action plan to address those needs
  • Possessing a strong understanding and perspective of the Health Care Industry including having knowledge and insight into various trends, events and changes happening in the industry
