Macaulay Child Development Centre is a multi-service organization that is a leader in the Child Care and Early Years Sector.  They deliver a distinct continuum of services that include: licensed child care, Early ON centres, family support and education, homework clubs, special needs services and preschool speech & language intervention.  

Founded in 1932, the Macaulay Child Development Centre has built a reputation as an innovator that partners with families and community to unlock the potential of children, especially those most at risk. Historically it was founded by a group of women, led by Hazel Macaulay, to provide care for pre-school children from low income families.   With services spanning childcare to parent advocacy to community services, Macaulay now serves over 12,000 children and parents a year.   Built on an established history of more than 80 years of supporting children and families in Toronto, Macaulay prides itself as providing the highest quality of care with experts in the fields of early childhood education and child development.

Macaulay’s staffing compliment includes over 300 employees; helping to make a difference for more than 7,000 children each year.

The Opportunity
The next Director of Programs at Macaulay Child Development Centre will join an organization in its 9th decade of service which is highly respected in its community and partner agencies.  The Director will plan and oversee multiple programs serving children and families of communities in need.  Collaborating with the Senior Management Team and the Programs team, the Director will take a lead in strategic planning for Macaulay, program evaluation, and in expanding funding sources.  This is a career role for a collaborative, resourceful leader who understands and enjoys the challenges and opportunities of working with children and communities in need.  As a passionate children’s advocate for the main principles of social justice (equity, access, participation and rights), the Director will develop and implement strategies for high risk urban communities.

Macaulay Child Development Centre seeks a Director of Programs a passion for delivering programs in the community that enables children to reach their full potential, empowering families and communities, and making a long-term difference in the policies and systems that give children the right start in life.   The next Director is a capable administrator of social services who is at ease leading and working with a collaborative team in a positive and diverse workplace.

The next Director of Programs will lead a staff complement of more than 40 supervisors and frontline staff who care deeply about the children and communities they serve, are proud to be part of Macaulay’s mission, and enjoy a respectful and peaceful working environment. A talented and experienced Senior Management Team collaborates in decisions to expand and maintain programs, services and the physical presence of the organization in the community.

  • 6+ years of progressive leadership and management experience in a non-profit or public institution focused on psycho/social supports, community development or education field required
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, organization, writing, and team-building skills
  • 6+ years experience supervising and/or training adult staff
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports/grants, develop programs and keep detailed records
  • Experience managing data collection and evaluation implementation processes
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently and as a team-member
  • Experience working with diverse groups and communities 
  • Be a collaborative and resourceful leader who understands and enjoys the challenges and opportunities of working with children and communities in need
  • Be a passionate children’s advocate for the main principles of social justice (equity, access, participation and rights) as strategies for high risk urban communities
  • Be a champion who can communicate the mission of MCDC
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Financial literacy skills strongly preferred 
  • Demonstrated strong management skills
  • Leadership competencies and/or training 
  • Experience managing remote teams and facilitating remote/virtual meetings 
  • Knowledge of video conferencing platforms (i.e. Zoom, MS Teams, Webex, etc)
  • Experience in unionized workplaces
  • Clinical experience in counseling and/or social work 
  • Bachelor level degree or higher is required in an area of study applicable to the role 
  • Masters level degree in a relevant field is preferred (i.e. Social Work, Psychology, Education, Business or equivalent)
