President & Chief Executive Officer, IWK Health Centre
The IWK, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is an internationally recognized academic health centre focused on women, children and youth. Ranked among Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals, the IWK is one of the region’s most admired employers. The IWK is responsible for shaping, cultivating and stewarding the health agenda for women, children, youth and families in Nova Scotia, and the Maritime Provinces through its regional mandate and partnerships. With over 57,000 inpatient days of care/year and 260,000 ambulatory visits/year, the health centre has charted an ambitious course to world-class outcomes, as exemplified in the unveiling of the state-of-of-the-art NICU in April 2018. The IWK is a respected centre for its world-class research into disorders and diseases affecting children and women. As a teaching institution, the IWK is affiliated with Dalhousie University and serves as a primary clinical resource for pediatric and obstetric teaching of a broad range of health professions including medicine, nursing, other allied health services and child life.
The President & CEO (CEO) is responsible for the strategic leadership of the IWK, an academic health organization with a budget approaching $300M with over 3,200 staff, 400+ physicians, 900 volunteers as well as learners and researchers. Trusted with the overall stewardship of this world class organization, the CEO will ensure the public interests are upheld while delivering excellence in quality, patient care, safety and research. The CEO will partner with the Nova Scotia Health Authority and other systems leaders to achieve the province’s health care goals, through collaboration on provincial planning and strategy, and identifying opportunities for systems transformation and the creation of a sustainable healthcare model for the future. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO provides inspirational and operational leadership to effectively navigate ongoing transformation that will take the IWK into the next era of health care.
As a qualified candidate for this opportunity, you are an accomplished executive in healthcare, or related complex multi-stakeholder environment, having demonstrated a commitment to quality care, partnerships, research and innovation, accountability and fiscal stewardship. You will ideally possess a Masters degree in a clinical or health services field, coupled with relevant post-graduate business acumen, education and professional development. As a highly-visible, collaborative and courageous leader, you will strengthen capacity on the senior executive team. You will be bold and nurturing, leveraging the strengths of the organization, in delivering transformational change. You will have a track record of building trust, credibility and effective working relationships with government. A compelling communicator, you have earned your leadership credentials by developing lasting professional relationships, demonstrating sound business judgment and operational excellence by managing people with the highest of integrity and by inspiring exceptional performance.
