Implementation of a Thrombosis Clinic at Eastern Health

Dr. Young, along with Dr. Rufaro Chitsike (hematologist /Thrombosis Physician), and the Regional Medicine and Pharmacy programs, developed and implemented a new thrombosis service within Eastern Health. Dr. Young and Dr. Chitsike, along with a health economist (Dr. Hai Nguyen) are leading research projects to evaluate the impact of these services on patient outcomes, associated health care costs, and care processes. In addition, Dr. Young is involved in projects evaluating the pharmacist’s role in the Thrombosis Service and patient satisfaction with team based care.

Debbie Walsh is the Director of the Regional Medicine Program within Eastern Health. She has worked in various roles within Eastern Health for over 28 years. In the past 11 years, Debbie has been in progressive leadership roles including Director of Perioperative Services, Rural Health and for the past 18 months, the Regional Medicine Program. The Regional Medicine Program includes responsibility for the inpatient and outpatient General Medicine, Regional Dialysis/Kidney services/Nephrology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Hematology and Thrombosis services, Stroke Care, Regional Endoscopy services, Provincial Medical Genetics, Diabetes, Provincial Insulin Pump Program, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Respirology. Debbie is a lifelong learner and has completed her Registered Nurse Diploma, Baccalaureate of Nursing degree, Masters of Health Studies (Leadership) and she has obtained her Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation. She embraces change and possesses a strong belief in employee recognition, engaging and empowering others.
Dr. Stephanie Young is an Associate Professor at Memorial University’s School of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacist and Coordinator at Eastern Health’s Thrombosis Service. Her work includes teaching in the School of Pharmacy, research, and a clinical practice in Thrombosis.
Colleen Fry is a program manager with the medicine program at Eastern Health. She has responsibility for Diabetes, Genetic, and the newly formed Thrombosis Clinic.
