The financial sustainability of health systems has been a concern for years. But do we have the whole story? Meanwhile, other dimensions of sustainability are increasingly coming into focus, relating to the social and environmental responsibilities of healthcare. So, what is a sustainable health system? Join us for a lively discussion among three experts in health policy who are passionate about the topics they will be presenting.

Dr. Andrew Boozary, Executive Director of Health and Social Policy, University Health Network
Dr. Andrew Boozary is a primary care physician and the Executive Director, Health and Social Policy at the University Health Network. He holds academic appointments as an assistant professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto and as an adjunct faculty member at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. Dr. Boozary, who announced in September 2019 that the University Health Network would be setting aside a parcel of land for affordable housing, will challenge us to think about social sustainability. Dr. Irfan Dhalla, Vice President of Physician Quality and Director of the Care Experience Institute, Unity Health
Dr. Irfan Dhalla assumed two newly created positions at Unity Health Toronto—Vice President, Physician Quality, and Director of the soon-to-be established Care Experience Institute. In these roles, he will work with colleagues to help Unity Health Toronto achieve its vision: The Best Care Experiences. Created Together. Dr. Dhalla continues to practice general internal medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, one of Unity Health Toronto’s 3 sites. Dr. Dhalla, was a Vice President at Health Quality Ontario before joining Unity Health. He will challenge us to think again about financial sustainability.
Dr. Fiona Miller, Professor and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Health Systems, University of Toronto
Dr. Fiona Miller is a Professor of Health Policy and holds the Chair in Health Management Strategies in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Miller’s research program is concerned with health technology and innovation policy and the role of health systems in sustainable development. Dr. Miller is the founding Director of the Centre for Sustainable Health Systems. She will challenge us to think about environmental sustainability.
Maintenance of Certification
Attendance at this program entitles certified Canadian College of Health Leaders members (CHE / Fellow) to 1.75 Category I credits toward their maintenance of certification requirement.
