Healthcare leadership is entering 2027 amid compounding pressures: sustained workforce strain, rapid technological change, rising expectations for inclusion and collaboration, and the continuing challenge of improving today’s services while transforming tomorrow’s systems.
Against this backdrop, the Refreshed LEADS Framework has been recently released to support leaders as they navigate their evolving challenges and opportunities. The refreshed Framework retains LEADS’ familiar five-domain architecture, while updating its capabilities and behaviour descriptors for the realities leaders now face.
For leaders and organizations, however, a refreshed framework matters only if it changes practice. The critical questions are therefore practical: What has truly changed? What remains essential? Which updates matter most? How should LEADS be adapted to different roles and local contexts? And what does emerging research suggest about how leadership should be practiced, developed, and supported in 2027?
Event Structure
The event will begin with a concise, forward-looking overview of the healthcare leadership context and the pressures leaders and organizations are carrying into 2027.
Dr. Geerts will then examine the Refreshed LEADS Framework: what has changed from the original 2008 framework, what remains, and which updates are most consequential for leaders, leadership developers, and organizations.
The main portion of the session will explore selected connections between LEADS and ongoing research on outstanding and expert leadership, evidence-based leadership and development, talent, leadership systems, and organizational performance.
Throughout, the session will distinguish changes that matter from those that are largely semantic, challenge common leadership assumptions, and consider implications across leadership levels, roles, and organizational contexts.
Finally, participants will identify practical next steps for their own leadership practice, leadership development, talent strategy, and implementation of the Refreshed LEADS Framework.

Dr. Jaason Geerts, PhD (Cambridge), is an internationally recognized leadership scholar, TEDx and keynote speaker, and executive educator.
He is the vice-president of research and leadership development at the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL), an associate at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, and an adjunct professor at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa.
He has advised organizations globally, including the World Health Organization, International Hospital Federation, Yale University, and the NHS. His research, published in leading journals such as JAMA Network Open and BMJ, has been cited by the WHO and has been featured in The Globe and Mail, CTV, and CBC National News. He created a model of crisis leadership that underpins nearly $500,000 in CIHR-funded research.
Dr. Geerts is a program director and instructor at Telfer and the Schulich School of Business, and a Toronto Star Teacher of the Year nominee.
