Music has always been more than sound within Black communities, it has been a powerful form of resistance, storytelling, and survival. From spoken word to rhythm and rhyme, music has given voice to lived experiences, challenged systems of oppression, and created space for truth, healing, and collective strength.
This session explores hip-hop as one of the most influential tools of resistance. We will trace the origins of hip-hop, including the meaning behind its name, its cultural roots, and the social conditions that gave rise to the movement. Participants will learn how hip-hop emerged as a response to systemic injustice and became a platform for political expression, community empowerment, and identity reclamation.
