The University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) have signed a three-year partnership to advance the capabilities of health leaders. The prestigious Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation is the only certification program for Canadians in this field, setting a national standard of professionalism.

Through this agreement, CSM graduate students in the Precision Health Program can opt to receive a CHE credential after completing their first four required courses in the program, as well as a rigorous assessment of their leadership capabilities and aspirations.

The partnership allows learners in the Precision Health Program to receive advanced standing in CCHL programs including the LEADS Learning Series, LEADS in Action Project, and Self-Evaluation requirements. They will qualify for a reduced rate to enroll in the CHE designation and receive several benefits including support for lifelong learning in health services leadership, assistance with career advancement, peer recognition and an essential career designation.

Brenda Lammi, Vice-President, Leadership and Professional Development at CCHL, says: “We are excited about this collaboration with the CSM, who show their commitment to health leadership by committing to incorporating the LEADS framework into their curriculum and having a preferred designation for their students.”

This collaboration allows  both organizations to better address the constantly evolving needs of health leaders and align themselves with the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework—that includes leading self, engaging others, achieving results, developing coalitions, and systems transformation. This framework is a foundation for Canadian health leadership development and defines the knowledge, skills and attitudes a leader must have to positively contribute to the Canadian healthcare system.

“There is tremendous opportunity in precision medicine for entrepreneurs and health leaders who are driven to move new ideas from discovery to implementation,” says Dr. Dave Anderson, PhD, academic director of the Precision Health Program. “This partnership is exciting for our learners because it provides an advantage by matching our innovative curriculum with their sought-after executive leadership credential.”

Commencing in September 2021, Precision Health is a part-time program for working professionals that culminates in a student-led master’s project in collaboration with community partners. Built around the concept of co-production of care, the curricula is designed to meet the professional development needs of both experienced and emerging health leaders. Students in the program select one of the following four specializations:

  • Quality and Safety Leadership gives clinicians and clinical administrators the operational and leadership skills to implement effective quality improvement and safety initiatives within health care organizations. Students learn how to analyze, measure, and continually improve the delivery of care to achieve optimal outcomes for patients, and when outcomes have unexpectedly not been optimal, they learn how to effectively respond to the needs of the patient, family, and healthcare providers.
  • Health Professions Education Leadership prepares leaders for the ever-changing world of health education with an evidence-based approach to curriculum design, delivery, implementation, and evaluation. Students learn how to adapt teaching and assessment practices in response to changing contexts, new research, and advancing technologies.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship is for those who want to make change happen by developing and implementing health innovations to improve patient care and contain costs. Students work with experts from the Haskayne School of Business to develop innovative solutions and viable business models for the healthcare industry.
  • Precision Health is for those who want to explore technologies in precision health and how they can be used to guide clinical and health-related decision-making. For example, how can genomic markers be used to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes? How can clinicians engage with machine learning tools to support their practices?
