Chief Executive Officer

Sartor and Associates Inc. has been retained by the Alliance for Healthier Communities (Alliance), based in Toronto, ON, to recruit a dynamic, strategic, and visionary leader as Chief Executive Officer to steer their organization to the next phase of its development through continued growth and evolution in a changing environment.

The Alliance for Healthier Communities is the provincial association for not-for-profit, community-governed, interprofessional primary health care organizations. We are the voice of a vibrant network of Community Health Centres, Aboriginal Health Access Centres, Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics, and community-governed Family Health Teams in Ontario.

The Alliance has a dual role in fulfilling its commitment to advancing health equity through comprehensive primary health care:

  • To improve the health and wellbeing of the 22% of people in Ontario who face barriers to health; champion health equity and population needs-based planning; and challenge systemic inequities to achieve improved health outcomes and address systemic barriers, particularly of four priority groups:
    • Indigenous
    • Francophone
    • Racialized, with a focus on the black communities
    • 2S&LGBTQ+
  • To ensure our members have the critical resources and policies to fulfill their mission in the communities they serve.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer is a pivotal role in the Alliance’s mission to champion transformative change to improve the health and wellbeing of people and communities through the four strategic directions. 

The position is unique in that, in addition to policy, advocacy, member relations and communications, it also oversees a robust academic and applied research program and a strong performance and information management program that is funded by the participating members. With these strategic elements, the Alliance is leading its members towards becoming a Learning Health System.

The Alliance is seeking a skilled strategic and visionary leader that is:

  • Inspired, open, perceptive, savvy and respected for being courageous and determined.
  • Known to possess strong political and business acumen, with the ability to build relationships to mobilize large cross sector planning, collaboration and collective action towards a common movement.
  • Bold and dynamic with a commitment to equity and anti-oppression who believes in the best possible health and wellbeing for everyone in Ontario.
  • Highly adaptable to change, able to navigate a complex and shifting health care system, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization through management of a committed and passionate staff team.

In addition, the successful candidate will have proven skill to work through effective partnerships to achieve collective impact outcomes that contribute to health system transformation.

  • In collaboration with academics and members, manage and participate in multiple research and evaluation projects.
  • Performance and Information Management Program:
  • Strong data governance enables the capture of high-quality standardized data within the electronic medical record (EMR) which feeds the Business Intelligence Reporting Tool (BIRT).
  • Our Community Initiatives Reporting Tool is an internally developed web-based application that enables members to document, evaluate and share community development programs and helps demonstrate the impact of the Model of Health and Wellbeing on health outcomes.
  • We have uniquely modified the western medicine designed EMR to incorporate standardized codes for Traditional Healing Activities that can be reported through BIRT to tell the story of culturally appropriate services.


Professional Competencies

  • Post graduate degree in health sciences, social sciences, public administration, business or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Over 10 years of senior leadership experience in a not-for-profit organization in the areas of health care and/or community social service sector in Ontario
  • Demonstrated professional experience related to advancing health and wellbeing for people and communities facing barriers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health equity and the impacts of racism and discrimination on different marginalized communities in Canada, especially diverse, intersectional equity-seeking groups
  • Demonstrated understanding of the collective impact necessary to create system change
  • Ability to build strategic relationships with influential leaders in government, other associations, and with the health and social services sectors, and the not-for-profit alliances
  • Proven track record of success in financial and operational oversight, fostering relationships, team growth, and an ability to cultivate and work effectively with a Board of Directors
  • Ability to maintain organizational engagement within the top quintile in Talent Map’s staff engagement framework
  • Certification with Canadian College of Health Leaders preferred

Technical Competencies

  • Exemplary public speaking skills with the ability to influence, negotiate and persuade
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with members, strategic partners, decision-makers and other stakeholders
  • In-depth knowledge of board governance, corporate governance, and general management best practices
  • Strong organizational, project and financial management skills, including oversight of operational plans, budgets and resource allocation across teams
  • Ability to conduct work within anti-oppression and anti-racism approaches
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to uphold health equity principles particularly as it relates to the identified priority groups of the Alliance 
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Fluency in French a strong asset

  • Demonstrated relationship-centered practice
  • Ability to lead and manage change processes
  • Comfortable in taking informed risks
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with outstanding communication, organizational and leadership skills
