Remembering Brian Schmidt, FCCHL

May 6, 2020

It is with deep regret that we announce that our colleague Brian Thomas Schmidt, FCCHL from Victoria, British Columbia, passed away on March 10, 2020 at the age of 67.

Brian Schmidt had joined the College in 1978 and was the Chair of our Board of Directors from 2014 to 2016. He was a distinguished healthcare leader and served in leadership roles such as Senior Vice President for the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) in British Columbia, and past Interim President of the BC Cancer Agency.

“I was very saddened to hear of Brian’s passing” said Feisal Keshavjee, CHE, Chair of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. “He was a consummate health leader who was kind, compassionate and generous. Healthcare in Canada definitely lost one of their great leaders.”

Brian Schmidt had been associated with Accreditation Canada in various capacities, including surveying for 20 years. Brian was a former member and Chair of a number of other health related Boards including the Board of Directors of the Health Employers Association of BC, and the Health Care Leaders Association of BC.

His academic background included an O.D. in Optometry (University of Waterloo) and a M.Sc. in Health Administration and Planning (UBC).

Colleagues and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page.
