VP, Clinical Support Services and Surgery

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is a community of 15,000 staff, physicians, residents, researchers and volunteers that proudly serves southwestern Ontario residents. We also provide specialized, advanced care to people from across the province. HHS is a world-renowned hospital for healthcare research. HHS focuses daily on improving the quality of care for patients through innovation and evidence-based practices. As the largest employer in the Greater Hamilton region, HHS plays a vital role in training the next generation of health professionals in collaboration with academic partners, including McMaster University and Mohawk College.

Reporting to the EVP, Clinical Operations & Chief Operating Officer, the VP, Clinical Support Services and Surgery is responsible for the for the overall operations of the Clinical Support Services (Pharmacy, Diagnostic Imaging, Perioperative Services, and the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program*) and Surgery. As a member of the senior executive team, the VP provides linkage between the portfolio priorities and overall HHS strategic priorities. The VP will lead a team of five (5) Directors with a total staff compliment of over 1600 FTE.

*The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program is jointly owned between St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) and HHS for the delivery of laboratory medicine to Hamilton Hospitals.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the provision of specialized clinical supports to enable the clinicians to deliver timely, quality services and inform their care.
  • Lead regionalized clinical support delivery in collaboration with partner providers.
  • With SJHH leadership, collaborate and integrate with the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP).
  • Establish strategic vision to realize the mandate of the program, which will position HHS for success in expanding to other services and with other external partners in the future.
  • Set the vision for decreasing unwarranted practice variation and promote standardization of process and use of leading practice across the programs.
  • Scope of responsibilities includes Endoscopy Services & Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD).

The successful candidate has progressive experience in senior management healthcare roles, preferably in surgery/clinical support services. With a Master’s Degree in Health Service Administration, Business Administration or related field of study, together with clinical credentials and expertise, the VP will bring significant operational management experience over services within a complex, matrixed academic healthcare organization. The new VP will be a credible leader in surgery program planning, operational leadership and business development with the ability to influence effectively in an academic medical setting.  They will have demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills and background/experience in facilitating high-level multidisciplinary group decisions. The VP will have an ability to analyse financial implications of new business opportunities and new programs to ensure economic feasibility and operational excellence are understood in the context of clinical decisions.
