We are a Status of Women Canada (Ontario) funded project on women's leadership in health care, health sciences and Indigenous health.
The overall goal of our project is to achieve transformative systemic change in health care, health sciences, and Indigenous health through the increased participation, visibility, and advancement of women in leadership positions.
We aim to achieve this goal by:
- building an active, effective and sustainable network and community of practice among established and emerging women leaders and
- enhancing their capacity to make transformative systemic change with evidence-informed tools.

We are working to support and promote Indigenous women and Two Spirit leaders in health!
We notice and acknowledge the absence of Indigenous and Two Spirit leaders in health care, academic health sciences, and other areas in the health care sector.
Whether you are a senior leader or an emerging leader, we want you to be part of our network! We share evidence and tools that facilitate organizational changes so there are more Indigenous women and Two Spirit leaders in health care, academic health sciences, and other areas in the health sector.
The first 2.5 day Learning Lab took place June 2018 in Ottawa and the second learning lab took place October 2018 in London, Ontario.
The third and final, Learning Lab will specifically focus on Indigenous women and Two Spirit leadership in health on June 24-26, 2019 at the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.
Participation and Application
Participation in the 2.5 day Learning Labs is free and includes a light breakfast and lunch. Participants will need to cover travel and accommodation costs.
Apply to participate by sending us a one page expression of interest outlining your leadership position or aspirations to leadership and a proposed (or ongoing) initiative aimed at promoting Indigenous women and Two Spirit leadership in your organization. Please also include a short (five pages maximum) CV or resume. Individual and Partner [eg, mentor/mentee] applications are welcome.
Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis until positions are filled or up until June 7.

Over the course of 2.5 days, participant goals from the Learning Lab are twofold:
- To gather and contribute to a set of evidence-informed tools and strategies to apply to an individually focused transformative systemic change initiative enabling greater gender equity in their organization
- To become part of a new and innovative network of established and emerging women leaders and community of practice empowering women’s leadership in the health sector more broadly
Please come prepared with an individual initiative or idea to work on throughout the 2.5 day learning lab. We ask participants to prepare a short presentation (3 slides max) and present on the morning of day 3.
Participants will work on developing and refining their individual initiative through 4-steps in a series of small group sessions:
- Initiative introduction
- Tool/Strategy selection
- Tool/Strategy adaptation
- Initiative refinement
The small group work will be facilitated by EWoLIH team members and a set of Mentors with specifically matched expertise to participant’s proposed initiatives (garnered from participant’s initial application).
Assignment to groups will shift from day 1 to day 2 to enhance feedback from a wider range of participants.
In this talk, Dr Bourgeault will provide an overview of the state of knowledge about women’s leadership in the domains of health care, health sciences and Indigenous health contexts. Based on this literature as well as interviews and focus groups with emerging and established women leaders, Dr. Bourgeault will share some promising practices to help women achieve leadership roles.
MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION
Attendance at this program entitles certified Canadian College of Health Leaders members (CHE / Fellow) to 13.75 Category I credits toward their maintenance of certification requirement.
