Guest Speaker: Dr. Jeff Beselt, Executive Medical Director, Geography 1, Island HealthThe North Island Hospitals project presents the unique opportunity of building two complete community hospitals in North Vancouver Island with a goal of supporting the facilities to work in a one hospital, two campus model. Join Dr. Jeff Beselt as he describes the journey to support the design process based on the Clinical team's guiding principles: A place we want to work and learn, evidence based design, and patient centred care, for all Islanders but especially First Nations and the Elderly. Dr. Beselt will describe the challenges and the successes, including medical and clinical staff involvement in leadership and design, clinical user engagement process, working through prioritization and conflict, as well as the process to support standardization in the new facilities with staff from Island Health and St Joseph's General Hospital. Dr. Beselt will also describe the next steps in supporting the planning of clinical operations and care transformation as he works with his team to support health and wellness across North Vancouver Island.
Dr. Jeff Beselt is the Executive Medical Director for Geography 1 at Island Health. Jeff also works as an emergency room physician at Campbell River Hospital as well as community physician in Kwadacha and Tsay Keh Dene, remote First Nations villages in northern British Columbia. Jeff completed his medical degree at the University of Alberta in 2002, and a family medicine residency in Prince George in 2004, subsequently completing additional emergency medicine certification in 2009. Jeff had the opportunity to live in Fort Ware (Kwadacha) for three years with his family, where he has provided care for the last 11 years. His children had the opportunity to attend school on reserve and learn the local language, Tsekene. Jeff has had the opportunity to work as Chief of Medical Staff at Campbell River Hospital, as well as the Medical Director for the North Island Hospital Project before taking on the role of Executive Medical Director in Geography 1 in October 2014. Jeff is passionate about improving the social determinants of health, patient experience, aboriginal health and cultural safety as well as supporting staff and physicians to transition well through all current changes in the North Island and views these as critical motivators in his work. Jeff is also a father to six energetic kids and husband to Sarah for 18 years.
