Since its inception in 2006, the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework has been growing in use to facilitate effective leadership and leadership development in the health sector in Canada. As demands for health reform continue, effective leadership is even more important today. Recent research has validated the contents of the LEADS framework; and its take-up across the country—and internationally—has been extensive.  Dr. Graham Dickson, Principal Investigator for the LEADS research, and partner with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and the LEADS Collaborative in supporting LEADS-based programming and certification, will provide an overview of local, provincial, national and international efforts to utilize LEADS to enhance leadership talent management. In that context he will also provide some perspectives re the importance of leadership for health reform in Canada.

Keynote Speaker: Graham Dickson, PhD

Graham is Professor Emeritus at Royal Roads University in Canada. Currently he is senior research advisor to the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders, Policy Advisor to the Canadian Health Leadership Network, and member of the LEADS Collaborative, an enterprise established to develop leadership within the health sector in Canada. He subsequently co-authored the book (with Bill Tholl) Bringing Leadership to Life in Health: LEADS in a Caring Environment. Graham is CEO of the LEADS Change Consulting Group and a partner in LEADS Global. In these roles he has recently designed programs on effective leadership for Accreditation Canada and Accreditation Canada International and has delivered leadership programs for King Abdulaziz Hospital in Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Health in Bahrain, the Institute for Quality Management in Brazil, and InterHealth Canada in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In addition, Dr. Dickson is actively engaged in teaching leadership to the physician community both here in Canada and in Australia.
