The objective of this session is to provide an update of Primary HealthCare (PHC) initiatives in NL including successes, challenges, and future plans. The new Primary Care Renewal Program, a joint initiative of the NL Medical Association and the Government of NL., will be described. The NL Government’s vision for PHC will be presented with a focus on ongoing reform initiatives and the recently approved provincial PHC Framework. The presentation will highlight the challenges of equitable primary health care delivery in rural and remote settings.

Robert Thompson is Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association. Prior to joining the NLMA in 2013 he worked for 31 years with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador including the positions of Clerk of the Executive Council and Deputy Minister of Health and Community Services.

Cameron Campbell is Director of Primary Health Care for the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Health and Community Services. He sits as a government representative on the governing body of the Primary Care Renewal Program. Cameron led the Development of the Province’s new PHC Framework after leaving the NLMA to join the Department of Health and Community Services.

Attendance at this program entitles certified Canadian College of Health Leaders members (CHE / Fellow) to 1 Category I credits toward their maintenance of certification requirement.
