Questioning the Safety Status Quo: Creating Buy-in for Disruption

  February 28, 2019
7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. PST
Patient Care Centre Lecture Theatre, Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria

Why do we do things the way we do? It’s a simple but often loaded question. When it comes to workplace safety, a lot of what we do and how we organize our systems have their roots in a legacy approach that isn’t always best-suited to the current care environment. But how do we go about addressing this? How do we build the coalitions we need and create the systems transformation required to get to our end goal of exceptional quality care?

Over the past five years, SafeCare BC, the workplace health and safety association for all private and non-profit continuing care organizations in BC, has been grappling with the very question of how to transform the culture of workplace safety in continuing care. With over 860 different employers and a workforce base of over 28,000 FTEs, it hasn’t been an easy task. But we have made progress. Join SafeCare BC CEO Jen Lyle as she shares SafeCare BC’s journey, from small start-up to thriving provincial association, in challenging the safety status quo, changing the perspective on workplace safety, and how to get it all done (even when you inevitably hit a roadblock). Participants in this session will:

  • Gain new insight into the intersection between health human resources, quality care, and workplace safety;
  • Challenge their own pre-conceived notions about what safety is, and where it fits organizationally;
  • Learn practical tools for taking a creative approach to developing coalitions and managing change; and
  • Identify new avenues and tactics for enabling systems transformation, including finding inspiration in unconventional sources.

Featured Speaker:
Jennifer Lyle, Chief Executive Officer, SafeCare BC

Jennifer Lyle is the Chief Executive Officer of BC's continuing care workplace safety association, SafeCare BC. Prior to coming on board with SafeCare BC, Jennifer worked in a dual role as a healthcare practitioner and the Director of Operations for a Burnaby-based rehabilitation organization after graduating from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She later obtained her Master of Health Administration at the University of British Columbia.

In addition to her studies, Jennifer has collaborated on research initiatives exploring the impact of care environments on elderly patients and care providers.

Jennifer is a strong advocate of a holistic approach to healthcare, and believes that creating positive, healthy environments for both providers and clients is key to effective, quality care. Out of the office, you can find Jennifer hiking in the backcountry, spending time with her family, or volunteering in the community.
