The Journey of a Patient/Client/Resident with Class III Obesity Across the Health Care Continuum

Chris Harris, Lori Manuel, Kelly Scaplen & Katy Van Gulick are graduates of Eastern Health’s Learning LEADerS Program. As part of the program, their team focused on researching and preparing a presentation and white paper titled “The Journey of a Patient/Client/Resident with Class III Obesity Across the Health Care Continuum”. The presentation will cover the journey of a patient with class III obesity in Eastern Health including a current state overview in Eastern Health and across the country; definition of class III obesity; obesity rates in Canada; transport considerations; and recommendations to ensure patient-centered care.

Speaker Biographies

Kelly Scaplen completed a diploma in nursing from the General Hospital School of Nursing, and continued her education to complete a Bachelor of Nursing from Athabasca University. Kelly spent most of her career as a frontline nurse with the surgery program. In 2008 she commenced a management position with Clinical Efficiency and in 2011 a management position with the Medicine Program at St. Clare’s hospital. In this management role her portfolio includes 4west and Ambulatory Treatment Unit. In 2016 Kelly was chosen by Senior Leadership at Eastern Health for the first Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Training Program. With this training Kelly has integrated this into her work emphasizing continuous improvement is all about learning, discovery, and growth. Lean and Six Sigma principles is well-suited to help streamline processes, foster invaluable leadership skills, reduce unnecessary spending, and much more. In 2018 Kelly completed the Eastern Health Learning Leaders Program. Kelly is currently working with Eastern Health as a Process Improvement Project Manager in the Cardiac Care program.

Chris Harris is an Advanced Care Paramedic and Operations Manager for the MedFlight NL program with Paramedicine & Medical Transport at Eastern Health. Chris is passionate about paramedicine and thrives on working through challenges to deliver frontline healthcare in the pre-hospital environment. He is interested in leadership development and continuing learning opportunities.

Lori Manuel is a Registered Physiotherapist and is a provincial manager with the Cancer Care Program of Eastern Health, NL. She is currently in her final year of study at Athabasca University’s Master of Health Studies Program, with a focus in Leadership. She is passionate about patient and family centered care and providing high quality and accessible cancer care services throughout the province of NL.

Katy Van Gulick is an Environmental Services Manager at Eastern Health for the past 5 years. She has just accepted the position of Quality Assurance for city sites for EVS. She is a strong advocate for staff and workplace safety. Katy has a keen interest in improving efficiencies of environmental services to providing quality service to patients, families, visitors and staff. She is very engaged in this project and sharing her knowledge of supportive services (behind the scenes work) in improving care for patients with Class III Obesity.
