On Tuesday July 18 at 8:30 PM (EST) join Healthcare Management Forum author Richard J. Webster, PhD, for a discussion on how healthcare organizations can decrease their impact on the environment.

We have partnered with the healthcare leader community #HCLDR, to deliver this tweetchat inspired by the July edition of Healthcare Management Forum focused on environmental stewardship in healthcare. Richard's biography, article abstract and additional information about the tweetchat can be found below.

Author: Richard J. Webster, PhD

Richard J. Webster, PhD, is the Interim Scientific Director of the Clinical Research Unit at CHEO Research Institute. Richard conducts research in a number of areas including how to make science more impactful and cost effective through improved statistical analysis, and how to promote sustainable healthcare. He will answer questions about how CHEO has decreased its climate impact and which initiatives have had the biggest impact.

Article: Climate action, staff engagement, and change management: A paediatric hospital case study

Planetary health and triple bottom line accounting are concepts healthcare organizations are starting to grapple with. While a few Canadian hospitals are early pioneers in efforts to deliver healthcare with less greenhouse gases, many hospitals struggle with adding a climate lens to their operations. This case study highlights a five year journey at CHEO to roll-out a hospital-wide climate strategy. CHEO has created new reporting structures, revised resource allocation, and launched net-zero targets. This hospital net-zero case study is an illustration of climate actions, given certain contexts, rather than a roadmap. Establishing this hospital-wide strategic pillar—during a global pandemic—has yielded cost savings, an inspired workforce, and meaningful greenhouse gas reductions.

Tweetchat topics (questions)

How healthcare organizations can decrease their impact on the environment

  1. What can healthcare organizations do to decrease their climate impact?
  2. What is the first action a healthcare organization can take to begin their journey to tackle climate change?
  3. Do climate initiatives in healthcare need to have a clear ROI in order to get executive approval, be successful or sustainable? Or can they get off the ground simply because it is the right thing to do?
  4. Most people are concerned about climate change. In healthcare, many agree that climate action is required but struggle to take on extra responsibilities. How can healthcare executives and co-workers support and participate in climate initiatives?

  • The tweetchat starts with greetings between the moderators (@Colin_Hung and @JoeBabaian) and the #HCLDR community.
  • The topics will be introduced throughout the tweetchat in graphical and text format by the @hcldr account.
  • Include #HCLDR (#hcldr works as well), and when applicable the topic # (T1 for example).
  • If you see a number under the tweet’s “Speech/reply bubble” you can click on the actual tweet to expand the conversation. To respond click the “Speech/reply bubble” under the main tweet or another tweet in the conversation (don’t forget to add #HCLDR).
  • To retweet, click on the “Retweet” icon (2 arrows in a square shape) then choose “Retweet” or “Quote Tweet” if you want to add a comment.
  • To start a new conversation, click on the “Tweet” button icon (upper left corner usually)–this is a good option when sharing resources.
  • Topics will overlap so in addition to the #HCLDR hashtag, include the topic # if you are outside of a conversation–great for linking a resource to a topic.
