Richard J. Webster, PhD, is the Interim Scientific Director of the Clinical Research Unit at CHEO Research Institute. Richard conducts research in a number of areas including how to make science more impactful and cost effective through improved statistical analysis, and how to promote sustainable healthcare. He will answer questions about how CHEO has decreased its climate impact and which initiatives have had the biggest impact.

Article: Climate action, staff engagement, and change management: A paediatric hospital case study

Planetary health and triple bottom line accounting are concepts healthcare organizations are starting to grapple with. While a few Canadian hospitals are early pioneers in efforts to deliver healthcare with less greenhouse gases, many hospitals struggle with adding a climate lens to their operations. This case study highlights a five year journey at CHEO to roll-out a hospital-wide climate strategy. CHEO has created new reporting structures, revised resource allocation, and launched net-zero targets. This hospital net-zero case study is an illustration of climate actions, given certain contexts, rather than a roadmap. Establishing this hospital-wide strategic pillar—during a global pandemic—has yielded cost savings, an inspired workforce, and meaningful greenhouse gas reductions.

Preparation

• Open a Twitter account and log into tweetdeck.com (uses Twitter's username/password)
• Click on the magnifying glass, type “#HCLDR” then press enter–this will open a column populated by #HCLDR content (you may want to open additional #HCLDR columns so you can have a monitoring one and a participating one).
• Be on-line at 8:30 pm EST (for your local time click here).
• If you have the opportunity, observing an #HCLDR tweetchat ahead of time would be beneficial (they take place every Tuesday at 8:30 pm ET, details can be found on the Healthcare Leadership Blog).

Participation

• The tweetchat starts with greetings between the moderators (@Colin_Hung and @JoeBabaian) and the #HCLDR community.
• The topics will be introduced throughout the tweetchat in graphical and text format by the @hcldr account.
• Include #HCLDR (#hcldr works as well), and when applicable the topic # (T1 for example).
• If you see a number under the tweet’s “Speech/reply bubble” you can click on the actual tweet to expand the conversation. To respond click the “Speech/reply bubble” under the main tweet or another tweet in the conversation (don’t forget to add #HCLDR).
