Island Health provides comprehensive health and care services to over 916,000 people across Vancouver Island, the islands in the Salish Sea, and the Johnstone Strait, as well as mainland communities north of Powell River.  Supporting Greater Victoria, Greater Nanaimo, a number of medium sized municipalities, and fifty First Nations communities through a team of more than 30,000 healthcare professionals, Island Health delivers a broad range of health services, including: public health services, primary health care, home and community care, mental health and addictions services, acute care in hospital services, and much more across a large, geographically diverse region.

Join Island Health as a Medical Health Officer and take on a pivotal role in improving health and reducing health inequities for populations across Vancouver Island, from downtown urban Victoria to the growing Nanaimo region to more rural areas or remote communities and First Nations. This position offers a unique chance to engage directly in all areas of public health practice, including population health surveillance and assessment, disease and injury prevention, health promotion, health protection, communicable disease control, environmental health, climate change, community development, and healthy public policy. Furthering your potential impact, all Medical Health Officers at Island Health are appointed as Clinical Faculty at the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia.  The role provides flexibility in choosing your place of residence, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant urban life in Victoria or the serene, laid-back ambiance of smaller communities. This flexibility ensures a high quality of life while addressing the diverse and changing health needs of Vancouver Island’s population. Embrace this exceptional opportunity to apply your skills and expertise to lead public health programs and interventions, advance healthy public policies, and foster positive change within a supportive and diverse public health team.

The ideal candidate for the Medical Health Officer role at Island Health is a dedicated and compassionate public health physician with a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (or Community Medicine) with an interest in public health practice that combines addressing complex health issues such as substance use with tackling emerging challenges like climate change impacts on health. With excellent communication skills, you excel at collaborating with diverse stakeholders, from community members to government officials. You are adaptable and are committed to improving health outcomes across varied communities. Your strategic thinking, combined with a hands-on approach, ensures effective implementation of health programs and policies that enhance the well-being of Vancouver Island’s residents.
