Twelve years ago, clinical trial investment and activity was in decline in Ontario and around the world. The Government of Ontario, along with hospitals, universities, industry, research ethics boards and other leaders in Ontario’s clinical trials community saw the opportunity to make this province a world-leader in conducting clinical trials. They came together to establish Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO), one of Canada’s first dedicated, non-profit clinical trials organizations with a mission to strengthen, promote and capitalize on Ontario’s competitive advantages for conducting high-quality clinical trials. This is achieved by streamlining processes to make high-quality clinical trials more timely, efficient, and cost-effective, thereby enabling smaller institutions and communities to participate. Today, CTO plays an essential role in fueling Ontario’s now thriving clinical trials sector. Since its inception, CTO has supported 2500+ research studies, saved the province over $22M in research administration costs, worked with 7,700+ partners, enabled over 140 hospitals and research sites to conduct high-quality trials, and supported sponsorship by over 280+ pharmaceutical and medical device companies. At the same time, CTO has helped develop 20 qualified Ontario research ethics boards to provide multi-site ethics review for other agencies.
Please join us on December 12th when Matthew D’Ascanio, Director of Streamlined Research Ethics Review at CTO, will share collective efforts that have allowed Ontario to attract trials, talent, and investment; a new Activating Research at Community Hospitals Initiative (ARCHi) was recently launched; and future initiatives are underway that will further improve start-up timelines which is crucial to ensuring Ontario remains as a top destination for research globally.
