Healthcare Management Forum is planning a special edition on mental health and addictions in healthcare leadership for May 2027.

Authors are invited to submit a 200-word abstract to lwilson@cchl-ccls.ca by September 8, 2025. Abstracts should include a short overview of the proposed manuscript, the intended audience, and key messages for readers. Full articles will be due for peer review by September 1, 2026.

The editorial staff will consider the following topics:

  • Youth mental health topics related to anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, social media, climate anxiety, academic stress, and limited school supports;
  • Indigenous-led and culturally grounded solutions for indigenous peoples facing disproportionate mental health and addictions challenges due to colonialism, intergenerational trauma, and systemic neglect;
  • Strategies to help tackle workplace burnout impacted by poor work-life balance, lack of mental health supports, and toxic workplace cultures.
  • Intersectional approaches to homelessness and housing instability, highlighting the attention on homelessness and complex health issues;
  • The unregulated drug supply , particularly stimulant use disorders and methamphetamine use;
  • Developing best practice guidelines for treating populations affected by the unregulated drug supply;
  • Alternative approaches to criminalization and incarceration—like crisis response teams, diversion programs, and mental health courts;
  • The impact of new technologies, such as AI, on mental health systems;
  • Integrated services for youth, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in planning their own treatment;
  • Incorporating the patient voice policy work;
  • Progressive quality improvement initiatives such as clients using their cellphones on in-patient units;
  • Initiatives focused on Rural and Remote Communities who’s access to mental health care is even more limited in rural and northern areas;
  • Approaches to tackling family and caregiver burnout as families supporting loved ones with mental illness or addiction who often feel overwhelmed, isolated, and unsupported;
  • Patient centered care and open access counselling initiatives;
  • The emergence of precision medicine in mental health and addictions;

If your topic does not fall into one of these categories but deals with an emerging trend, innovative practice, or an important issue facing our youth related to mental health and addiction in healthcare, please feel free to submit an abstract. All potential authors will be contacted through e-mail by the Managing Editor.
