The Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) has awarded LEADS certification to an innovative program in Western University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. The partnership agreement provides students in the master’s program in Applied Health Sciences with an opportunity to obtain their Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation while completing their studies.

The Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation is the only certification program for all Canadian health leaders. This program offers individual leaders several benefits including support for lifelong learning in health services leadership, assistance with career advancement, peer recognition, and serves as an essential career designation.

Brenda Lammi, Vice President, Leadership and Professional Development at CCHL, said: “We are excited about this collaboration with Western University, who show their commitment to health leadership by committing to incorporating the LEADS framework into their curriculum and having the CHE as a preferred designation for their students.”

“This partnership is an extension of our commitment to creating transformative learning experiences for our students that help them meet their career goals and also shape the future of health and health care,” says Jayne Garland, Dean of Western’s Faculty of Health Sciences. “Helping to develop strong leaders for the health care system is going to be critical to the future of health care delivery in Canada, and Western University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, is excited to be part of this future.”

This collaboration will also allow both organizations to better address the constantly evolving needs of health leaders and align themselves with the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework—that includes leading self, engaging others, achieving results, developing coalitions, and systems transformation. This framework is a foundation for Canadian health leadership development and defines the knowledge, skills and attitudes a leader must have to positively contribute to the Canadian health care system.
