Shaila Jiwa named recipient of the 2021 Celebrating the Human Spirit Award

March 29, 2021

The Canadian College of Health Leaders is proud to announce that Shaila Jiwa, Senior Practice Leader for the Provincial Health Services Authority’s Office of Virtual Health, has been named recipient of the 2021 Celebrating the Human Spirit Award.

In her previous role as Senior Practice Lead for Provincial Tuberculosis Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control, Shaila was an advocate to ensure communities receive the highest level of care and has actively sought input and feedback from affected communities to improve clinical services across BC.

During a recent event she organized to bring together healthcare providers from across BC to foster collaboration, she invited tuberculosis survivors to share their stories. This was probably the most memorable part of the event and helped healthcare providers recognize not only the impact they can have on patients’ healing journeys, but also see areas for improvement from their perspective.

She co-led another project that has been invaluable in building relationships with Indigenous communities and a demonstration of her commitment to reconciliation. Throughout her work, Shaila exhibits a spirit of humility, grace and gratitude. Shaila’s care for others, especially those who are underserved and marginalized, embodies the best of humanity. She engages with patients and colleagues as equal partners and consistently works to advocate for health care that is not only competent but is delivered in a safe, culturally sensitive manner.

The Celebrating the Human Spirit Award recognizes and honours the meaningful contributions of individuals or teams, who provide health services, for acts of caring and compassion that go above and beyond the call of duty, which inspire others and have a profound and lasting impact. This can be interpreted broadly to include any act that improves an individual patient’s health and/or spirit, the lives of the patient’s family and/or the community. This award is a vehicle to share their stories with colleagues from across Canada and to help inspire others.

The Celebrating the Human Spirit Award is sponsored by HIROC. The Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) is a member-owned expert provider of professional and general liability coverage and risk management support.

This award is part of our CCHL National Awards Program. and will be presented at the virtual Honouring Health Leadership event on June 16, 2021.
