To kick off the year with a family focus, NAC Northern Alberta is organizing an event designed for busy parents and professionals. This event will launch our first trimester of activities, centered on Health Human Resources. We are excited to combine a parent-and-child yoga session by Glow Yoga, along with childminding services, and a talk by an inspiring speaker: Nathan Banda.

Featured Speaker:

Dr. Nathan Banda

Nathan is a family man and a minority leader of African descent in Alberta's healthcare sector. He believes in the power of collaboration, teamwork, and sharing a clear, realistic vision to enhance the delivery of safe and high-quality services. Nathan currently serves as an Administrator at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Ambulatory and Care Centre in the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), where he is the Director of Surgical Services. He is a member of several Clinical Strategic Networks within AHS and sits on numerous committees related to the operations of Alberta Surgical Initiatives in the North Zone and across AHS. He is also a member of the AHS Talent Supply Working Group, which focuses on strategizing the recruitment of internationally trained nurses within AHS. Furthermore, Nathan serves as a Senior Operations Leader on the AHS Provincial Diversity and Inclusion Council and Co-chair of the AHS North Zone Diversity and Inclusion Council.

Nathan is currently completing his Doctoral Research at Royal Roads University, with a focus on nursing retention in rural Alberta. His research is titled 'Factors that Affect Nurse Retention in Rural Canada: Managing Nursing Shortages in Rural Alberta.' Nathan is passionate about diversity and inclusion in the workplace, particularly in healthcare. In 2022, he presented a paper titled 'A Minority, Black Employee's Perspective on the Unspoken Racism in Alberta Health Services' at the Socially Engaged Applied Doctoral Research in Canada conference, hosted by Royal Roads University. His upcoming presentation, titled 'Beyond the Rhetoric: Leading with Intentional Inclusion in Today's Healthcare Workplace,' will share insights from his doctoral research. He also presented his research at the Canadian Rural & Northern Healthcare Conference – Spark Conferences in March 2024. Nathan emphasizes that unless we close the 'back door,' our efforts to recruit nurses into the workforce will remain futile.
