Presentation - "Here’s what three years of cutting-edge research of leadership during the pandemic couldn’t have told you"
Dr. Jaason Geerts is the Director of Research and Leadership Development at the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) and a former Honorary Visiting Fellow at The Bayes Business School, University of London in the UK.
Jaason completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge on leadership for professionals after two Master’s and a teaching degree at Cambridge and the University of Toronto respectively.
In addition to a recent TEDx Talk and having contributed to a recently published business book, Credible: the power of expert leaders, his work has been featured in international peer-reviewed journals, the Globe and Mail, CBC national news, CTV news, and local radio, as well as globally through the International Hospital Federation and British Medical Journal journals.
The model of leadership in a crisis that Jaason created is the theoretical foundation for a recent successful CIHR research grant valued at $450,000 and he participated as an invited advisor for a World Health Organization symposium on health system recovery.
Jaason is also a program director and instructor at the Telfer School of Management (University of Ottawa) and the Schulich School of Business (York University, Toronto).
Jaason is also a qualified teacher and was nominated for the Toronto Star’s Teacher of the Year.
Margaret Melanson, Horizon Health Network, Interim President and CEO
Presentation - "Horizon’s Leadership journey, lessons learned from the CEO"
Margaret Melanson Interim President and CEO, Horizon Health Network Margaret Melanson has been the Interim President and CEO for Horizon Health Network (Horizon) since July 2022. During this time, she has led the organization through many positive changes in response to the challenges faced by our health care system, including improvements to critical priority areas of access, flow, experience and retention and recruitment. Margaret was formerly Horizon’s Vice President Clinical Services, and prior to that was Horizon’s Vice President of Quality and Patient Centred Care. She was the former Executive Director for the Saint John area, where she was responsible for clinical service delivery within acute care, among other responsibilities. She also has experience leading a number of clinical networks across all Horizon.
Margaret has extensive clinical and administrative experience in the health care sector, having also previously served as Vice President of Clinical and Facility Support Services for the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation, among other roles. She is also a Past President of Speech-Language and Audiology Canada, and the New Brunswick Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Dalhousie University, as well as an Executive Master of Business Administration.
Jessica Nowlan, CASCADES (Creating a Sustainable Canadian Health System in a Climate Crisis), Regional Lead for Atlantic Canada
Presentation - "Healthcare in a Changing Climate: Creating sustainable health systems"
Jessica Nowlan is the Regional Lead for Atlantic Canada with CASCADES (Creating a Sustainable Canadian Health System in a Climate Crisis), working out of the Healthy Populations Institute at Dalhousie University. Her portfolio includes greenhouse gas emissions measurement in healthcare and sustainable primary and community care. Jessica has over 10 years of experience working in health services research and has worked with funders, researchers, patients, and health care providers to build and support innovations in the health system throughout her career. She has facilitated the CASCADES-led Summer Institute on Sustainable Health Systems and an interprofessional education course on Planetary Health through Dalhousie University. Jessica holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University and a Master of Information from the University of Toronto.
Brent Godbout, P.Eng., Service New Brunswick, Health Services, Energy Manager
Presentation - "Good Energy - Horizon’s approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in healthcare facilities"
Brent is the Energy Manager with Service New Brunswick’s Health Services division supporting Horizon Health Network. Since 2020, he has been leading the Horizon Energy Network with energy management expertise resulting in significant greenhouse gas reduction and cost avoidance. Through this role, he has also supported Horizon’s integration of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System, and played a key role in Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital being the 2022 ENERGY STAR® Canada Building of the Year Award for hospitals.
Previously, Brent was a Commercial Energy Advisor at Efficiency NB. During his time there he led a number of significant energy initiatives and programs in order to advance the energy efficiency and conservation within the commercial sectors of NB.
He has a passion for energy management and greenhouse gas emission reduction especially pertaining to healthcare facilities and has experience in leading energy opportunity projects.
Brent is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGNB, a certified RETScreen Expert and a member of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society.
