Book Title: Always Learning: An eclectic leadership path
Although I retired in 2017 from my late-in-life career pivot as a program evaluation consultant, I’ve been a member of the innovative Imagine Citizens Network Executive Leadership Team for the past two years, with my focus placed on policies and processes. How did I get here and what did I learn about leadership along the way?
I have a long career path to reflect on, where volunteer opportunities and experience were as important as the formal education (BEd, MSc in Health Promotion). For much of my career, I had to invent the job or build it from the ground up (who had heard of lactation consultants in 1987?). I had to learn to lead from a distance or from the side when I wasn’t in charge (which was most of the time), whether with not-for-profit boards, town council, committees, or as an acting executive director. Always learning.
I leveraged, through a combination of education, volunteer work, family support, good luck, and maybe a large dollop of overconfidence, to pursue opportunities never imagined by my small-town high school career counsellor in 1969, while living in another small northern town. Come chat with me about how a passion for learning can lead to surprising places.
