This webinar discusses Lean as a philosophy and framework for improving health systems beginning with published studies from the 2000s. The focus will shift to a description of three articles published by the presenter during the height of Lean popularity in Canada. The first article addresses the lack of empirical studies on Lean and is a protocol for a Cochrane systematic review. The second paper outlines the development of an operational definition, while the third addresses methodological gaps in the literature in terms of comparative analysis, statistical analysis, and return on investment. The presenter will share experiences and lessons learned as a scientist-practitioner, covering topics such as implementation, evaluation, and sustainability. The webinar concludes with a précis of recent scientific publications and contemplates the future of Lean management in healthcare.

Dr. James Chan
James Chan is a senior healthcare leader from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He has held both clinical and management roles in health systems for over 20 years, and has worked in all health sectors to plan programs, improve operations and redesign services. James has a BA (Hons - focus on Industrial/Organizational Psychology) from Simon Fraser University; a Master’s degree in Counselling and Educational Psychology from the University of British Columbia; and a PhD in Health Sciences from UNBC (focus on health system measurement and evaluation). In addition, he has extensive professional background in business and management, and is a certified LEAN Black-belt. His research interests include: Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Quality Improvement, Operations Research, Mental Health and Addictions, and Knowledge Exchange/Transfer. He has published articles, professional reports, and book chapters in the scientific literature.
Currently, James is the Director of Innovation at the Sault Area Hospital in Ontario, where he is responsible for Data Analytics, Health Records, Registration, Medical Affairs, Digital Health, and Research departments. He is also sessional faculty in the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, and a lecturer in the Health Quality Programs at Queens University.
