2025 Recognition in Delivering Value-based Healthcare awarded to Providence Health Care

April 23, 2025

The Canadian College of Health Leaders is proud to announce that Providence Health Care’s St. Paul’s Immunotherapy in Neurology Clinic (SPIN) has been awarded the 2025 Recognition in Delivering Value-based Healthcare for its innovative approach to care.

SPIN has pioneered BC’s first unified immunotherapy program for inflammatory disorders affecting the nerve, muscle, and brain. The introduction of a subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) program has improved patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs. By integrating patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) into clinical practice, SPIN has empowered patients to actively engage in their care and improved their overall quality of life.

The clinic’s success stems from its collaborative approach, where patient voices guide treatment decisions and outcomes. The team uses PROMs to assess the effectiveness of treatments and share results with patients, fostering shared decision-making. This model shifts from hospital-based treatments to home-based therapies, reducing costs while maintaining high-quality care. This approach has led to a more efficient healthcare delivery system, lowering hospitalizations and resource use, while enhancing patient satisfaction.

Aligned with Providence Health Care’s strategic goals, the SPIN clinic exemplifies value-based healthcare by delivering the right care at the right time and in the right setting. The clinic’s success has led to plans for expanding the SCIg program across the Vancouver Coastal Health authority, further improving patient access to cost-effective, high-quality care. SPIN’s innovative model demonstrates the potential of value-based care to transform healthcare delivery and outcomes.

The College’s Recognition in Delivering Value-based Healthcare aims to increase the profile and understanding of value-based healthcare by honouring an organization, or team, that is deliberate in changing the way that care is delivered, resulting in improved patient outcomes. This means that patients are being optimally cared for at the right time, in the right setting and at the right cost.
