Congratulations to the 2024 Solventum Health Care Innovation Team Awards Recipients

April 17, 2024

The Canadian College of Health Leaders and Solventum (previously 3M Health Care) are proud to announce that the recipients of this year’s Solventum Health Care Innovation Team Awards are Provincial Health Services Authority and Unity Health Toronto.

Solventum Awards - PHSA

Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is the recipient of the Solventum Health Care Innovation Team Award (Disruptive innovation initiative(s) across a health system) for its pioneering efforts in reshaping out-of-hospital care in British Columbia. Facing a crisis exacerbated by the opioid epidemic, COVID-19, and environmental emergencies, PHSA’s BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) team launched the BCEHS Clinical Hub in January 2022. This groundbreaking initiative connects low-acuity and non-urgent patients to alternative care pathways, such as Urgent and Primary Care Centres, detox centers, mental health supports, and palliative care. By collaborating with health authority stakeholders, PHSA aims to shift patient referral programs, ensuring 70% of patients access alternate care pathways within the next decade. This transformative approach not only relieves strain on emergency services but also promises improved patient outcomes and a more sustainable healthcare system for all British Columbians.

SolventumAwards - Unity Health

Unity Health Toronto is the recipient of the Solventum Health Care Innovation Team Award (Within an Organization) for its innovative work in harnessing the power of data and advanced technologies to revolutionize healthcare delivery. Led by Dr. Muhammad Mamdani, the Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA) team has deployed over 50 AI and analytics tools, resulting in tangible benefits such as reduced mortality rates, streamlined nurse assignments, and improved clinical decision-making. Initiatives like CHARTwatch, ED RN Assignment, and automated algorithms for intracranial hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury detection have significantly improved patient outcomes. The DSAA team’s collaborative approach with frontline clinicians ensures responsible and effective AI implementation, addressing critical issues of patient safety, ethics, privacy, and IT security. By prioritizing patient values and needs and staying at the forefront of applied health AI globally, Unity Health Toronto exemplifies excellence in healthcare innovation.

These awards, sponsored by Solventum, are part of the CCHL National Awards Program and will be presented at the CCHL National Conference on June 4, 2024.

About the Innovation Awards

Starting in 2024, the Solventum (previously 3M) awards’ focus shifted from quality improvement to disruptive innovation, to highlight cutting edge system transformation and outcomes, diverse population, and sustainability of change. These awards will continue to be presented in two categories, which have been updated to: Disruptive innovation initiative(s) within an organization, and Disruptive innovation initiative(s) across a health system. Changes and updates were made to the award criteria that include removing the minimum of 18 months of evidence of sustainability and focused instead on addressing long-term social and environmental needs to the organization/system.
