Pallium Canada and CCHL Partner to Offer a Health Leadership Specialty (HLS) in Palliative Care and Establish a New Three-Year CHE Strategic Alliance

June 1, 2021

The partnership to offer an HLS serves as an avenue to promote excellence, life-long learning, and impact in health leadership.

Pallium Canada has entered into a strategic partnership with the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) to offer formal learning opportunities that represent advanced training and leadership in palliative care.

The Health Leadership Specialties (HLS) are a new offering from CCHL which create a pathway for those with their CHE designation towards eligibility for the newly launched CCHL Fellows Select program.  Health Leadership Specialties provide CCHL the opportunity to partner with organizations that offer excellent, best-practice and relevant advanced learning in areas of priority for health leaders.

The HLS in palliative care is an opportunity for Canadian health leaders to learn and apply best practices that will provide health care professionals with an in-depth learning experience on essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach. By achieving the HLS in palliative care, health leaders could impact the health system and distinguish themselves in an imperative skillset.

Through this agreement, eligible members and Pallium Canada employees will work towards obtaining their Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation, the only certification program for all Canadian health leaders. This program offers individual leaders several benefits including support for lifelong learning in health services leadership; assistance with career advancement; peer recognition and also serves as an essential career designation.

Brenda Lammi, Vice President, Leadership and Professional Development at the CCHL, said: “Health Leadership Specialties are an exciting new development for CCHL as we have the opportunity to partner with incredible organizations and hopefully influence the life-long learning and impact of health leaders as they apply what they learn directly in their daily work”.

Jeffrey Moat, Chief Executive Officer at Pallium Canada, said: “Health care leaders play an essential role in improving the quality and accessibility of palliative care in Canada. This partnership with CCHL is an opportunity to ensure more leaders have access to important knowledge and training on the principles and benefits of the palliative care approach and how to effectively integrate palliative care in organizations, health services, and regions they manage, ultimately resulting in better health outcomes for Canadians”.

Through this partnership, individuals with their CHE engage in the Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) Leaders course (available in October, 2021), apply their learning in their workplace and write a paper on the impact and experience of knowledge translation.  The paper is reviewed by a panel of three CCHL Fellowship Evaluators, who award (or not) the Health Leadership Specialty in palliative care.
