Who is the Program For?

This program is offered at no cost to all College members, at every stage of their career, from coast to coast.


Benefits to Mentor / Mentee

The College defines mentorship as a professional relationship between people with different levels of experience and expertise.

Mentors help mentees to identify their professional development needs, set goals, access networks of like-minded people, build confidence, and learn about the knowledge, skills, and attitudes an individual needs to successfully lead within the Canadian health system. Mentors are coaches, career guides, confidantes and positive role models.

This relationship is also immensely rewarding for mentors. It allows them to gain insight into the barriers facing aspiring leaders, reflect on their own work and share their wealth of knowledge and experience.

Certified College members, serving as a mentor or mentee, can earn one MOC I credit for every hour of mentoring.


Scope

The National Mentorship Program is completed in three phases. During phase one, the initiation, mentors and mentees are matched using the College's formal tool. Matches are based on areas of interest and expertise. Mentors and mentees can request a partner within or outside of their region. They are encouraged to review the profiles and reach out to the individual(s) who are best suited to their development. Partners then meet to discuss the relationship and establish roles, become familiar with one another and set expectations and objectives. New goals may be added based on the discussion and learning that takes place in the early sessions.

The second phase, development, allows members to create a relationship that fosters growth and learning. Members meet on a regular basis, as mutually agreed, and progress is made towards goals and expectations.

The final phase, separation and redefinition, occurs when needs and goals have been met and the program comes to a conclusion. Each participant completes an evaluation and the results are used to make program improvements.

    How Mentorship Ties to LEADS

    The LEADS in a Caring Environment Framework represents the key skills, abilities, and knowledge required to lead at all levels of an organization. It aligns and consolidates the competency frameworks and leadership strategies that are found in Canada's health sector and other progressive organizations. Visit the LEADS web site for additional information.

    Mentors and mentees are encouraged to use the five competencies of the framework - Lead Self, Engage Others, Achieve Results, Develop Coalitions, and System transformation - to identify their goals. Worksheets outlining the specifics of each competency, and how they relate to goal development, are available to College members.
