Recognizing increased mortality rates, extended hospital stays, and rising costs post-admission at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre (QEII), Nova Scotia Health’s Trauma Consult (TC) Service emerged as a solution. After extensive planning and stakeholder engagement, the TC Service, comprising dedicated physicians and nurses, was inaugurated in October 2022. This initiative bridges the gap in trauma expertise, ensuring comprehensive care from admission to discharge.

The introduction of a Virtual Follow-Up Clinic further extends patient support post-discharge, a previously overlooked aspect. By prioritizing patient-centered care, Nova Scotia Health transforms the hospital experience for trauma patients and their families, fostering a sense of purposeful navigation through their recovery journey. This pioneering approach not only enhances patient outcomes but also establishes a precedent for holistic trauma care nationwide. Nova Scotia Health’s commitment to innovation and patient-centeredness embodies excellence in healthcare delivery.

The Excellence in Patient Experience Award is focused on honouring organizations and individuals who have set in place innovations that improve the human experience in healthcare. The award highlights and recognizes innovations that have made a change to how patients and their families experience healthcare services.

The award is sponsored by Abbott Laboratories. From removing the regular pain of fingersticks as people manage their diabetes to connecting patients to doctors with real-time information monitoring their hearts, from easing chronic pain and movement disorders to testing half the world’s blood donations to ensure a healthy supply, Abbott’s purpose is to make the world a better place by bringing life-changing health technologies to the people who need them.

This award is part of our CCHL National Awards Program and will be presented at the Honouring Health Leadership event on June 2, 2024.
