The March 2024 edition of Healthcare Management Forum addresses the importance of crisis preparedness. Geo-political strife, mass casualty events, civil conflict, population displacement, natural disasters linked to climate change and, of course, pandemics, can overwhelm capacity across economies and destroy food safety, secure supply chains, and clean air and water. These realities test people, communities, and leaders to their limits. This edition offers real-world examples of how people, organizations, and their communities responded to these overwhelming challenges.

Francescutti, MD, PhD, as they talk about the importance of building disaster resilience in healthcare and why it is crucial to distinguish between emergencies, disasters, and catastrophes and deploy a multi-dimensional approach which includes robust electronic communication channels, comprehensive family-oriented evacuation plans which include pets, and dedicated protective equipment for first responders. Drs. Sauve and Francescutti will also discuss the critical role of government support in flood prevention and disaster preparedness, pulling from their first-hand experience with the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta. They will offer practical tips for health leaders to manage future crises. Read the blog entry by esteemed lawyer Gilbert Sharpe, as he writes about how hospitals can prepare for the ever-increasing demand on their emergency rooms as a result of police with persons in custody suffering from serious mental illnesses and addictions. Record numbers of people end up in emergency rooms across the country waiting to be assessed in attempts to divert these individuals from being taken to jail, and the pressure on public hospitals is now acute to admit them under the authority of the Mental Health Act. Sharpe, the former long-time Director of the Legal Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, has published several books on health law as well as hundreds of articles.

Listen to the podcast with Helen Edwards, RN, MN, moderated by Dr. Marcy Saxe-Braithwaite, DBA, CHE, RN, as they talk about how technological advancements, like the Ivenix Infusion System, can be implemented in Canadian hospitals to support the seamless integration between infusion devices, electronic health records, and other hospital information systems, ultimately supporting the broader system of care.
